The Wild Salmon season always starts in May, and for a few months, small outfits of traditional salmon fishermen are allowed to catch wild salmon in a strictly regulated frame work. Wild salmon fishing is an artform – click here to read more about it.
For about five years, we were not able to buy wild Irish salmon due to a driftnet fishing ban in Irish waters. During those years, the stock levels of wild salmon recovered considerably.
Since 2011, we can again buy wild salmon, and the first person to eat our Wild Smoked Salmon was Queen Elizabeth II and the almost 180 guests at the State Dinner during the visit of the Queen in May 2011 – read the full story here!
HOW LONG WILL SMOKED FISH KEEP?
Smoked salmon, trout, mackerel usually keep for at least three weeks as long as the pack is sealed and chilled in the refrigerator. This is due to the salting, smoking and vacuum packing of the fish (see also "How we smoke our salmon").
Consume by use-by date. Once opened consume within 3 days.
The use-by date format is DD/MM/YY. You can find the use-by date on the back of the vacuum packs.
WHAT ARE THE DELIVERY DATES?
We send out our products on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and if requested, Thursdays (except for Irish bank holidays). We strongly advise not to schedule deliveries for Fridays because we want to avoid that your order gets held up in a depot over the weekend in case of a delay of delivery.
If you select a Friday delivery date, we cannot be held responsible for late deliveries.
We can never deliver on Mondays (or Mondays & Tuesdays for destinations that have a 48 hours delivery period, like for ex. USA), Saturdays nor on Sundays. Also no deliveries on bank holidays in the destination area.
WHAT DELIVERY SERVICES ARE BEING USED?
We use DPD for within the island of Ireland*, and UPS for destinations outside Ireland. Both UPS and DPD deliver door-to-door. The reason for sending it by courier is that postal services would not deliver within the required time.
* As our website can’t distinguish between Northern Ireland and UK, select "Ireland" as the delivery country in the checkout process, if you want an order to be sent to an address in Northern Ireland. This will save you freight costs. Then in the post code field, enter the Eircode V95 HD70 of the Burren Smokehouse. Enter Lisdoonvarna as the city/town. Make sure to enter the real delivery address details in the other address lines so that we know where to send the order. We will then manually change it to the right delivery address in our system.
HOW LONG WILL A DELIVERY TAKE?
For deliveries to Ireland and most countries of central Europe, shipments take 24 hours to arrive. For deliveries to countries further afield like the US, Japan, Canada it takes 48 hours. To the UK, some areas in Switzerland and islands, the delivery may take 2 days.
WHAT COUNTRIES DO YOU DELIVER TO?
We generally deliver to Ireland and Northern Ireland, UK, all European countries, the US, Canada, Japan and Hong Kong. We do not deliver to Australia nor New Zealand due to customs regulations.
DO YOU DELIVER TO POST OFFICE BOXES?
We will not be able to use PO Box addresses. We will always need a physical address to be able to deliver to the recipient.
Also, we need a valid post code, zip code or Eircode (for destinations in the Republic of Ireland). We will not be able to process your order without one unless the destination country does not have a post code system (like Hong Kong).
HOW TO CALCULATE THE FREIGHT?
The freight costs depend on two variables: the destination and the weight. The first kilo is always the most expensive one, every following kilo to the same address gets charged at a lower rate.
Also, the weight is rounded up to the next full kilo (2.5 kg = 3 kg in shipping weight terms). See here for more information about freight. At the bottom of that page, you will find downloadable information on how to calculate the freight.
